Short Message Service (SMS)

Short Message Service (SMS) are components of the text communication service of telephone, Web or mobile communication systems, using standardized communication protocols that allow the exchange of short messages between fixed or mobile devices. SMS is the most common application of data in the world with 2.4 billion active users, or 74% of all mobile phone users. [Edit] The term SMS is used as a synonym for all types of short messages and user activity itself in many parts of the world.

SMS as used on modern mobile phones come with a radio telegraphy in memo pagers through standard phone records and later defined as a part of the global system for mobile communications (GSM) standard series in 1985 [1 ] as a way to send messages up to 160 characters [2], and from GSM mobile phones. [3] Since then, support for the service expanded to include other mobile technologies such as CDMA and AMPS Digital ANSI, as well as satellite and terrestrial. [Citation needed] Most messages are text messages SMS from mobile to mobile, even though the standard supports other types of messages as well.
